Our Story
We love every minute of our journey
Our desire to assist couples with their plans for a life together as husband and wife really resonated in our hearts and minds so much that we made the move to officially become Premarital Counselors and Certified Marriage Mentors. We want couples to know that marriage can be happy, healthy, lasting if done right. So, we present God's Blueprint for marriage to every couple we meet and council with. One of the main focus we bring to the lives of couples is the fact that a God marriage must include the presence of God and effective Team Work. We not only want to be a couple that teaches God's Blueprint, but a couple that lives God's Blueprint.

We are our first employees and we take our instructions and directions from the Holy Spirit. We have ministered to couples internationally as well as domestically.

We Love Getting Couples Ready for a Lifetime of Marriage. Sharing God's Blueprint has Been Awesome!
Whenever we sit with couples sharing with them what marriage is really about, teaching them about effective communication, how to resolve conflicts and understanding that our conflicts are designed to grow our oneness and not cause isolation. We also serve couples that say "I Do" again. It's our prayer that God will continue to use us in this capacity.

Intentional Series, Segment #6 - Forgiveness
The Gift of Forgiveness
Matthew 18:21-35
How can you lift the debt from your debtors if you don’t comprehend your own indebtedness? How can you offer that freedom if you yourself have never received it? One of the biggest obstacles to forgiving others is our failure to understand the depth of God’s forgiveness for us. Not until you accept that God has paid the penalty on your account will you cease your efforts to collect from others.
When you take God at His word, this glorious freedom can start to sink in. Then you can then begin the process of offering your offenders full forgiveness. You must choose to leave all punishment or retaliation up to the Lord. It is essential that you surrender your so-called “rights,” whether it is your right to get even or to get justice. Remember, we can totally trust God to handle our injustices appropriately because He is the ultimate judge.
It may be helpful to write out a list of all the offenses against you that you can think of. Then bring them one by one before God and leave them at His feet. By doing this—and by asking for His help—you can release your offender to the One who says, “Vengeance is Mine” (Heb. 10:30).

The Prescription for Justice
The Bible says “vengeance is God’s; He will repay” (Romans 12:19). What a great reminder. Forgiveness doesn’t diminish justice, it just entrusts it to God. We tend to give too much or too little, but the God of justice has the precise prescription. God can discipline your abusive boss. He can soften your angry parent. He can bring your ex to his knees or her senses.
Forgiveness doesn’t diminish justice, it just entrusts it to God. Unlike us, God never gives up on a person. Never. Long after we’ve moved on, God is still there, probing the conscience, stirring conviction, always orchestrating redemption. Fix your enemies? That’s God’s job.
When it comes to forgiveness, all of us are beginners. No one owns a secret formula. Remember this: as long as you’re trying to forgive, you are forgiving. Just stay the course, and you’ll find a way to be strong even when you’ve been hurt. You’ll get through this.
Next Week's Family Life Message - Segment #7
The Differences Between Men & Women
Family Environment
It is our strongest desire and goal to present to those we come into contact with the joys of marriage and how to build a marital relationship with God first, then with each other and how your marriage can be a living example to other couples.

My wife an i have been married for over a year now and we use advice, lessons, and experience that we gained from the BLUE PRINT program acquired from Team Mathis. They are not only personable and well informed but they lead by example. It was such a breath of fresh air to watch two people that have been married for 40+ years not only respect and serve each other, but exhibit how madly in Love they were with one another actively. They gave us biblical instruction on love, taught us the keys to healthy communication, loved on us, FED US, and MARRIED US when we had completed the class. The experience that we had with them is one that we will never forget. We refer ALL of our friends that are in serious relationships to them. They are a power couple with a powerful message and an important mission to reverse the high levels of divorce currently sweeping the country, and it’s great to know that my wife Malya and I have the tools necessary to stay together for as long as we are alive. Thank you both so much! We love you! God bless you.

Hi Brother and Sis Mathis,
Hope you both are doing well.
We would say, your marriage seminar at Plantation was a success, attached is a picture of Ronel and I around 6 months later. Lol. We are ever so thankful for both of you.
- Marie and Ronel

Thank you Team Mathis
Good afternoon-
It's been a while since we last chatted. Just wanted to reach out and keep you informed of my wife and I progress.
It's great to say "my wife" it's just as you mentioned, nothing can start until my wife wanted to do the work.
Since my last interaction, we have made great strides to resolving and working on our relationship. From fasting to going to church and just having the hard conversations.
We have since relocated, just for a fresh start. Also because I was promoted to a new position. I can't stress how trying the end of the year was, but we are in such a better place because of it (prayer from all the prayer warriors). We also saw the importance of reviewing our manuals from time to time, and hope to schedule a session with y'all just to re cement our commitment.
Please continue to keep us in prayer and as always, I thank God for putting the both of you in our lives!
I can't wait to see y'all.
Love and respect,
R & J

Marriage Mentoring - Helping one couple at a time
Our marriage mentoring courses is just one of the many services we provide and watching God work in the lives of these couples is a strong source of encouragement and we thank God for using us in this and other capacities.
Every time Working with married couples who are interested in strengthening their marriage relationship has been a blessing to us as well as the couple themselves.
This couple named themselves as "Team Committed" and as they prepare to renew their marriage commitment after 15 years, they want to make sure they incorporate sound tools for the next phase of their marriage.

"Together We Thrive" Marriage Seminar
The NOW Worship Center
March 20, 2017
To Whom It May Concern,
T.E.A.M Mathis visited our church in early March to conduct the "Together We Thrive" Marriage Seminar. Rick and Denise were amazing, they shared such useful information with us regarding understanding our spouse's needs as well as understanding our own needs, effectively communicating those needs, and various other important marital relationship topics. The session was very interactive and although they were addressing some very real topics, Rick and Denise still managed to make us laugh throughout the evening. Even though our session was only two hours long, the attendees all seemed to leave with some important take-a-ways and with a strong desire to invite T.E.A.M Mathis back again to pour some more wisdom and laughter into our lives.
We would highly recommend Rick and Denise Mathis to any church or organization that is looking to enrich the marriages of their members.
Sincerely,

The G.L.A.D. About Marriage Series at Plantation SDA Church

Plantation SDA Church
G.L.A.D. About Marriage Series | January 21st - February 11, 2017
We registered several couples, but confirmed 44 that attended the weekly series. Immediately following the second service, the couples were served weekly a full meal in the beautifully decorated gym. Following lunch, the couples stopped by the registration table to sign in each week, get their name badge and wristband, then entered the sanctuary for a two-hour interactive workshop. The marriage series ministered to Adventist couples along with Pentecostal, Non Denominational and some spouses who aren't affiliated with any Christian faith. Some of the wives registered their husband's names in faith, not knowing if they would be able to get their husbands to attend, but by the grace of God, the husbands not only attended each week, but participated and began to form relationships with other couples so strongly, that they want to be able to continue the relationships.
At the end of the four-week Marriage Series, February 11th, we concluded the last Sabbath with a couple's processional as the church congregation looked on with excitement, some couples invited their family members to witness the celebration of marriage and their completion of the series. Elder Rick and Denise Mathis, Team Mathis presented sermonettes entitled "Intentional Marriages", Bible texts taken from Genesis 2:18, 21-24
A Companion for Adam - Then the Lord God said, “I see that it is not good for the man to be alone. I will make the companion he needs, one just right for him”, the first intentional marriage. Following the Sermonettes, the Elders anointed each couple and a re-dedicatory and re-commitment to marriage prayer was offered, as couples embraced each other, and as tears flowed a mighty move of God filled each couple, the presence of the Holy Spirit was felt throughout the entire service.
The Marriage Series concluded with a luncheon where couples exchanged love letters that had been prepared during the series and prior to the luncheon and each couple also received a Certificate of Completion from Team Mathis. Some of the love letters expressed a genuine desire to use the tools given in the series to strengthen their marriage relationship and to make their home a better environment for them as well as their children. Couples of Plantation SDA Church mentioned that they were proud to be members of a church that not only talked about marriages, but a church that actually put something in place to help them.
We've attached some photos of the Marriage Series, Divine Worship Service, and Luncheon and if possible, we would like to have this information included in the Southern Tidings.
Sincerely,
Rick and Denise Mathis

Maranatha SDA Church
"Crazy Love" Marriage Series
February 19th - 25th, 2017
Pastor Gervon Marsh contacted us while we were just beginning the G.L.A.D. About Marriage Series at Plantation SDA Church and he mentioned that he was on our website and that God had impressed him to contact us for their marriage series. We confirmed the dates and begin to plan. Over fifty couples registered for the week of marriage emphasis on "Crazy Love" and each night couples poured into the fellowship hall where they were greeted by the "Crazy Love" planning team including Pastor Marsh. There was a light meal nightly as they gathered and enjoyed the meal prepared for them and enjoyed some fellowship time prior to the series start time.
Pastor Marsh informed us that the church’s mission for the church was focused on family and love. We were given "Crazy Love” as the theme for this week of marriage emphasis and the first night we met with the couples we asked for their definition of Crazy Love, and as the couples of each table discussed what their definition should be, they came up with; UNHINGED, UNRESERVED, UNCONDITIONAL, UNMEASURABLE, PASSIONATE, UNFATHONABLE, COMMITTED, JOYFUL, UNEXPLAINABLE, INFINITY, HAPPINESS, UNCOMPRIMISED, UNRESTRICTED. As we planned for the couples, our goal was to get them to prepare for the communion service that was scheduled for Sabbath, February 25th . The nightly topics and interactive exercises all focused on strengthening and restoring relationships through better communication and ways to resolve conflicts. Throughout the week, couples were challenged to access their marriage through various activities and exercises. They also participated with other couples seated at their table to resolve conflicts by using the tools given to them by Team Mathis.
The Crazy Love Marriage Series concluded Sabbath, February 25th in the Divine Worship Service. Sermonettes by Elder Rick and Denise Mathis was entitled “Crazy Love”, Bible texts John 3:16 and 1 Corinthians 13:4-8.
At the conclusion of the service, Pastor Marsh instructed the congregation to the various locations in the church where foot washing was to take place and the couples that participated in the marriage series was lead to the room prepared for us to wash the feet of our spouses and pray.
We want the thank Pastor Marsh and the Family Life Committee Members for inviting us to minister to the couples of the church and community.
Sincerely,
Rick & Denise Mathis

Lauldi Nedd and her awesome team at the Tabernacle Seventh-day Adventist church is phenomenal. They are an organized group that sticks together through any obstacle they that presents itself. We've worked with Lauldi with the Pure Reality for Teens, Singles, Young Adults and Married Couples retreats.
Team Mathis has had the opportunity to work with them for many years on several projects and the experience has always left us more blessed then when we began. They are serious about the power of prayer and watching God change hearts, minds and lives. They have a passion for the purity of teens and young people and teaching them the value God places on their lives and how the Temple of God should be protected and honored. Thank you Lauldi for the awesome working experience you and your team have always shown us.

Reference Letter: Rick and Denise Mathis
I have had the privilege of working and using the skills of both Rick and Denise Mathis over the past 13 years via youth and family ministry initiatives. I consider it to be an honor to provide a reference on their behalf.
This dynamic duo is passionate about youth, family and marriage. What makes this couple so inspiring is their willingness to be transparent. Their presentations are educational, innovative and interactive.
Rick and Denise was instrumental in the early development of Pure Reality. Their active involvement assisted in expanding the ministry throughout South Florida and impacting hundreds of lives. In addition, they have been involved with active training of leadership, mentoring programs as well as being facilitators.
The innovative presentations to the youth were exceptional. I have met several young people over the years that still talk about the Mathis’ presentations and how they influenced their lives.
Over the past 2 years, we have had the privilege of using the Mathis’s for our segment of the Pure Reality Annual Adult Retreats “Pure Couples”. Needless to say, their presentations were magnificent!
Their passion to empower married couples to work through their differences and provide critical guidelines to those contemplating marriage is an asset to our churches and community alike.
Thank you Rick and Denise for making a difference! I salute you as an invaluable asset in our church and the community. May God bless your ministry.
Sincerely,
Lauldi Nedd Director

Letter of Recommendation for T.E.A.M. MATHIS LLC
Subject: Letter of Recommendation for Elder Rick and Denise Mathis
20 October 2016
To Whom It May Concern:
Please accept this letter as my personal recommendation for Elder Rick and Denise Mathis. It was my sincere pleasure to serve as an Elder of the Mt. Pisgah Seventh-Day Adventist Church along with Elder Mathis. Shortly after becoming members, Elder Mathis and his wife were elected to serve as Family Life Directors for a term from 2006 to 2010.
Elder Rick and Denise Mathis are an excellent team. During their tenure as Family Life Directors, they worked untiringly to strengthen families and marriages and to make them all that God desired them to be. They actively engaged in family ministries to build relationships. They established and organized the First Fruits Couples group; instituted Brown Bag sessions to discuss issues relevant to the family; provided numerous counseling sessions to troubled couples and families. They conducted a month-long Wednesday night sessions of Christian Home and Marriage Life which included workbooks for married couples, singles and activities for children, that ended with obtaining yearly devotionals for the families of the church, just to name a few. In addition, other Wednesday night prayer meeting series were conducted on the family which focused on commitment, forgiveness and how to love unselfishly. They also sponsored the first Weekend to Remember trip with the participation of more than 30 couples. In 2016 they conducted a Marriage Enrichment Seminar which included Couples' activities, homework assignments, insightful presentations and discussions, culminated by a Couples reception.
It is worth noting that through the singular efforts of Elder Rick and Denise Mathis the Mt. Pisgah church family was deeply enriched and blessed. Only heaven knows the marriages that have been healed and rekindled because of their efforts and prayers. I have greatly admired their talents, hard work, time and commitment in which every undertaking was performed with the greatest amount of excellence. I am confident they will continue to provide counsel and seminars at a level that will be commensurate with their love for God and the families He has called them to minister to.
If you have any questions regarding this reference, or any aspect of their performance, please don’t hesitate to contact me via email or phone.
Sincerely,
Elder George E. Brantley

Andrew & Itallia Clarke
Re: The Mathis’ and Team Mathis
As a new wife only married at the time 2 months 7 days I had no clue what I signed up for. I must say it was my very first brown bag session with the First Fruits group and with our Family Life Directors Mr. & Mrs. Mathis at Mt. Pisgah, I was so excited to receive tools that would help me be the wife god wanted me to be. This session was one of the best sessions yet. As married couples, we learned how to love on each other, the prayer position (love it), and the chocolate feeding. We also learned that whatever that was said in the session stayed in the room. I have never heard anything repeated even now almost 10 years later. I have attended several sessions and I am still Iearning new things.
The First Fruits group bonded as a family, we pray with each other, have date nights. If one is in trouble we do not ask any questions, we just take it to the lord in prayer. We use the tools that we were taught, whether in brown bag sessions, marriage seminars or round table sessions with Team Mathis.
Elder Rick and Sister Denise are true to their work, not only have they taught my husband and I how to be the life partners we should be, but they have also taught us the importance of our roles designed by god. Denise teaches the wives how to pray for their husbands, provided tools to learn each other's love language, teaches the importance of the intimate moments and how to still have fun with your mate. Elder Rick teaches the husbands several things, prayer for their wives, how to communicate with their mate, and how to keep the love going.
I am truly blessed to be a part of their ministry. God called them to this ministry to help save families and marriages and to help put us on the path of truly loving each other how god planned. I am grateful for the personal talks, the check yourself reality checks and for helping to save my marriage in the times of trouble. God's Blessings is on their ministry and it is my prayer that their ministry reaches the world. Thank you both for everything we love you so much. We have the tools to build and keep building a solid marriage with God as our anchor.
We recommend any of the ministries or services Team Mathis has to offer the couples and families of your church and community. The lessons taught are priceless!

A Message from The "A" Team
Our recent experience with T.E.A.M Mathis was at the G.L.A.D. About Marriage Series. This event really inspired our marriage and allowed us to view things a lot differently. We were able to see the different components that make up marriage in a more logic and cohesive perspective. The interactive activities and discussions were fruitful and were geared towards everyday real-life marriage issues; for example, the power to resolve conflict in a timely manner.
While conflict is inevitable, we have the power as a couple to unite and respond to conflict proactively. G.L.A.D. About Marriage Series is a gift to married couple regardless of years being married. The most experienced married couple that attended the series was 44 years married; with all the wisdom and experience they shared together, they still humbly allowed God to bless their marriage and revitalize areas where improvements were needed.
Without reservations, we recommend all married couples and even those planning to get married to consider the G.L.A.D. About Marriage Series and allow God to transform their marriage. Thank You God, for empowering T.E.A.M Mathis.
Thank you T.E.A.M Mathis!!!

Building Friendships that Last
The couples that are "Meant to Be" are the ones who go through everything that is meant to tear them apart and come out even stronger than they were before.

First Fruits Couples Group
Rick & Denise Mathis, founders of the "First Fruits" Couples Group which was organized In 2009. We started with the group by implementing "Brown Bag" luncheon sessions, where we presented and discussed with them effective tools for communicating with each other and ways to resolve conflict in a timely manner. In addition to the luncheon sessions, we took trip with them to the "Weekend to Remember" couple's retreats in Sanibel, FL. Over the years, we continue to fellowship with them through personal contact, luncheons and occasional marriage mentoring. These couples developed a unique bond that has lasted for over nine years as they continue to grow stronger together. They've supported each other through good times and trying times.
Over the years, their once young children are now heading off to colleges, locally and well as out of State and they too have developed a strong bond and support group among themselves.
First Fruits consistently celebrate birthdays and anniversaries together and enjoy the time they spend with each other.

To Rick and Denise Mathis:
As Family Life Leaders of Mt. Pisgah, my wife Erica and I would like to thank you for bringing the G.L.A.D. About Marriage Series to the Mt. Pisgah Couples including ourselves. Each week we were engaged in activities that taught us the importance of working together as a Team and realizing that our schedules can keep us busy with other things, but we were reminded that it is important as husband and wife to make time together on a regular basis for and with each other. Scheduling time for our weekly homework and scheduling date night is something we will remember to do on a regular basis.
The information and tools presented each week within the series enriched each couple in attendance. May God bless your ministry as you bless other families, you have both been a blessing to the Mt. Pisgah married couples and we would gladly endorse and recommend the G.L.A.D. About Marriage Series to any and all churches, it's worth investing into all married couples.
Thank you so much and we look forward to working with you again in the near
future.
Sincerely,
Kevin & Erica Bryan

Reference Letter for T.E.A.M. Mathis LLC
This letter is to attest of my family’s great appreciation to Team Mathis. Rick and Denise has and continues to provide premiere marriage saving techniques for me and my husband of 23 years. It all started about ten years ago when me and my husband joined their Brown Bag session and was introduced to other couples looking for better relationships. The Mathis’ called this growing group First Fruits. In First Fruits, the Lord inspired the Mathis’ to uniquely and individually assess each couple and presented us with the necessary tools and practices we needed to promote happier marriages. These practices extended outside of the church and into our homes for workshops/potlucks, Sanibel Island for couple retreats and various locations for date nights. Thus, the Mathis’ not only changed the value of our marriages, but created a tight bond and friendship among many of the couples within First Fruits. These friendships have forged into something that only God could separate and we owe it all to Team Mathis.
A few years ago, my husband and I renewed our vows to one another for our 20 year anniversary. It was yet again the Mathis’ who counseled us and officiated over our ceremony. Ever present were many of the First Fruits couples who are now my faithful friends. Words are not enough to show our gratitude to the Mathis’, so we thank them by staying happily married and we recommend all the ministries and services God has blessed them with.
Sincerely,
Cedric and Elmie Titus

To whom it may concern:
When I transferred my membership to Mt. Pisgah SDA church, I was looking for a family life ministry that was devoted and committed to unite families and bring them closer to God. I needed a ministry that would fellowship not only with myself as a mother and wife, but that would also empower myself and my family to become a family focused on God. The Mathis’ through First Fruits brought all these things to me and so much more.
First Fruits gave me the opportunity to learn more about myself. I learned how to better relate to my family by recognizing and accepting my own imperfections. First Fruits enabled me to learn new things about my husband, which helped me change my perspective and become cognizant of my reactions. In addition, the assignments helped me to reflect on my marriage and helped me to evaluate my role as a wife. It taught me how to improve on my marriage with my husband, and my relationship with my children.
First Fruits created an environment where I felt comfortable to not only share but also comfortable enough to grow and accept the many challenges motherhood and marriage would inevitably present to me. The Mathis’ gave me the opportunity to develop new and true friendships. We have laughed, cried, and built a strong bond together. These friendships have grown to become more than church friends but rather a family who continues to support and motivate one another. I am grateful not only for Rick & Denise Mathis, who are the founders of First Fruits but, also for the new brothers and sisters that I have gained through the program.
In everything that was led by the Mathis, we were reminded to always include Christ. We will cherish everything that we have learned and will continue to apply them in our daily lives. After leaving a session with the Mathis, we felt encouraged, renewed, determined and revived. Under the leadership of Rick and Denise Mathis, they led a family life ministry that was impeccable.
We highly recommend all the family life services Rick and Denise Mathis has to offer.
Love Always,
Michael & Ruth Williams

From Tim & Yvonne Stanley
Our names are Tim and Yvonne Stanley and we’ve known Rick and Denise Mathis for over 20 years. We are very honored to share a few our Family Life experiences with you.
Back in 2007 we were invited by the Mathis’ to attend a Family Life/First Fruits potluck meeting after church. We attended and from that day forward we’ve met friends that will last us a lifetime. The Mathis’ have conducted numerous meetings, potlucks, and brown bag sessions that we have been blessed to be a part of. During these meetings First Fruits was born. Basically, First Fruits are couples that have been married for a year or less and up to over thirty years or more.
Rick and Denise shared personal moments in from their married life with the couples and taught us how to communicate, disagree, pray and love each other the way God intends it to be. I can remember one Sabbath afternoon at a potluck after dinner we broke away from our spouses meaning the men went with Rick to one side of the house and the women went on the other side of the house with Denise. It was at that moment I knew they were being lead by the Holy Spirit. Denise expressed to the ladies that whatever we discussed was to stay between us and not go any further. Once we started sharing different events in our lives and marriages we all realized that we’ve all been there or we were going through a similar period in our marriages. Denise encouraged us to share how we dealt with certain situations and then she prayed with us and showed us how God expected us to work through our problems. My husband told me that Rick did the same thing with the men. We’ve learned so much and have a bond with First Fruits through Rick and Denise that will never be broken.
First Fruits have taken trips to Family Life’s Weekend to Remember together and it’s been a wonderful learning experience. We have been taught how to listen and make quality time to share with one another. We have been taught to pray for our marriage together and to make sure that we call out our spouses name so that they know we are bringing their name to God’s throne. We been taught how to enter act with one another when were angry with another and most importantly we been taught how to identify each other’s love language.
Rick and Denise have planned events that our kids could come and enjoy as well as intimate candle light dinners for the married couples. We are so blessed to have learned so many things from them and you will see exactly what we mean when you have an opportunity to work with them.
Blessings,
Tim & Yvonne Stanley

What God Did With Our Undeveloped Strength

The Mathis’s are one of the few couples that I met that have been married for such a long time but still act like they're on their honeymoon. I had the pleasure of meeting them at a marriage workshop they conducted at my church a few months ago. I loved watching them interact with each other: Denise would giggle as Rick whispered in her ear, they held hands, and gazed into each other's eyes in a way that made me blush sometimes. They had an easy rapport with each other and clowned around like teenagers. It was beautiful!
I asked Rick and Denise to share some nuggets from hurdles in their marriage over the years:
In November of this year we will gladly celebrate 40 years of marriage and we realize we could not have done that on our own, so we offer thanksgiving to God for His blessings of the past and for what He will continue to do in the future for us.
We believe that the greatest challenge on our marriage was learning how to balance children, our home, our jobs and the responsibilities and positions of church life. As our children grew, we continued to take on more responsibilities in the church and figured since God called us to work in the church, He would care for our children. When we saw the progress reports of our children, it then dawned on us that they needed more time with us than we were giving them.
We had to have a meeting with our family and God revealed to us that our children were our responsibility and that we could not leave the raising of them to Him alone. We began to seek the assistance each child needed and we began the process of limiting or balancing our time between home and church with the understanding that our children was a priority. We enrolled in training sessions to understand how each child learned and the environment in which they could learn. We attended family counseling to learn more about our adopted children and how to blend the both. We both felt guilty at first about limiting our leadership and responsibilities of the church, but we realized that the in-reach ministry in our home had to be greater than our out-reach for the church and community and that God’s blessings were still with us.
In facing the challenges of raising adopted children, we realized several things that we did not know and the very difficult times could have divided us and even ended our marriage. There were times, we felt that if we had not reached out for help the entire family would have suffered in ways we would not like to think about.
There was one time in particular when we felt we had done all we could until one Sabbath at church we heard a sermon on forty days of fasting and praying. Together we decided to fast from specific things, television and radio, meat and the Holy Spirit inspired us also to pray three times a day. As we followed the Holy Spirit in this fast we found a sense of peace with each other that we hadn’t experience in a while. As we entered our 20th day of fasting the Spirit instructed us begin praising God as though our prayers had been answered. But to our surprise, things got worse and there were times when our prayers only included tears and groaning, we felt our peace leaving and we prayed, cried and pleaded with God more. The forty days came and went with no answer from God, but a week later, we experienced something that grew our faith in God and we saw the benefits of fasting and praying.
We realized even though we felt we weren’t equipped for these challenges; God knew better, in spite of what we thought were weaknesses. We also realized that when we’ve gone to the end of our strength, seeking God with such transparency and humbleness and understanding that His strength is sufficient was a huge faith builder for us. Our closeness today is learning how to grow together in our valley experiences when it’s just us and God.
We’ve learned how important prayer is in our lives individually, and as a couple. That growing oneness as a couple takes a daily commitment to each other and the family. We would like to pass on to couples to give God a chance to work out the issues in their marriage and family life and not let the really hard stuff separate you, but to use it to grow closer to each other and to appreciate each other’s strengths and talk and pray about the differences in each other.
For me [Denise] as a wife and a mom, I’ve learned that there was strength in me that God wanted to develop and instead of asking God to take away the really hard stuff that made me spend countless times in tears, He showed me that my peace and strength was not found in me, and if I would seek Him, I would find it, and that He only allows stuff to happen in our lives, He knows we can handle.
For me [Rick] as a husband and father, these times allowed me to realize I needed more of God and less of me. I was shown the importance of living a life devoted to God first and then my family. God showed me how to pray in times of adversity, how to become that spiritual leader in my home by instituting morning and evening worship. I encourage husbands to develop a prayer life and watch God WORK!! WON’T HE DO IT!!
New insights about God through these experiences offers us hope as a couple. Looking back on the past thirty-nine plus years, we can see how our faith has grown because of the challenges in our marriage and family life. We know that God is working in our lives, we know because we’ve seen Him over and over again and we realize that it could not have been anything of our doing, except to surrender to a mighty God who has our best in His heart and following His plan for marriage and family life and we look forward to the forever years as Rick and Denise Mathis. Jeremiah 29:11 says; For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome. We choose His outcome every time.

Dear Rick & Denise
We want to express a heartfelt thank you for everything Team Mathis has done for our marriage. Thank you for your prayers, time, dedication, shared wisdom and non-judgement acceptance. Thank you for your God given passion for striving to help heal marriages. Working with you over these past few weeks has been such a blessing. You two are a dynamic couple and we pray that God will continue to bless the wonderful work you do. May your own marriage grow stronger everyday. We will truly miss our counseling meetings. The only regret we have is that we wished we found out about Team Mathis sooner, but everything happens in God's perfect timing. We love you guys, God bless.
From the bottom of our heart.
Dear Rick & Denise
Our God is amazing! My God knows all of our needs, our wants and all our desires. My God knew that on the day my wife and I said “I do” that the devil said they won’t! They won’t last that long, they would not be able to deal with their past hurt to move forward in their marriage. They would not be able to deal with anger issues and infidelity. They would not be able to communicate effectively or deal with our financial situation. The Devil was sure that we would be another statistic a broken family attributing to the high divorce rate and perpetuating the cycle he needs for his agenda.
In all this he forgot we serve a mighty God that before we were yet formed in our mother’s womb, before I laid eyes on my beautiful wife made his own plans for us. That plan was in the form of Team Mathis. A dynamic duo with over 20 years of ministry, along with over 38 years of personal experience in their own marriage. God knows my wife and me and knew that we would need someone with patience, someone who was non-judgmental, and most importantly someone with experience true belief and faith in the almighty. That is what we found in Team Mathis Christian Counselor who dedicated their time, efforts and prayers to help in any way possible. I want to first thank God for blessing us with Team Mathis giving them the experience, talents and drive to continue His Ministry. Secondly I want to thank Team Mathis we really appreciate everything you have done you have truly been a blessing. The devil is alive and upset and everyday he plots on how to break my marriage but with the foundation of the Mathis and with God in our lives and in our marriage it is not going to happen. My wife and I will continue to pray for you both and most importantly the Ministry that has taught us so much.
Love,
D & C
Dear Team Mathis
We cannot thank you enough for coming into our lives when you did. When we decided to renew our vows, you made sure we were not doing it for show or just to spend our money on a fanfare, but you sat us down, counseled with us on what our marriage looked liked before, then what we wanted it to look like in the next 20 years. Thank you for showing us through your life and ministry, what God’s blueprint for marriage looks like and how we can have a successful marriage and family life.
Thank you!
Dear Rick & Denise
You guys are a blast to hang out with but for us it was more than just hanging out with friends it was hanging out with our sister and brother our marriage counselors of 20 years, it was hanging out with a couple who we attributed and admirer for giving us the tools needed to put out fires in our relationship and the tools needed to keep the passion and love for one another as our highest priority those two weeks reminded us of how important it is to hang out with people who believe in the institution of marriage, it also gave us through your example the things we need to work on for the next 20 years especially me (opening doors) LOL.
Thank you for spending those two weeks and anniversary weekend with us thank you for your passion for family life and the institution of marriage, may God continue to bless your ministry.
Love you both.
To: Team Mathis
We used to see marriage counselling as a last resort option for couples who were dealing with serious issues and were headed for divorce. Thankfully we didn’t wait until our disagreements got to that point and now recognize that this should be the first step, even before a problem arises. During the sessions with the Mathis’ I realized that my husband and I loved (and liked) each other very much and had nothing but good intentions for each other. What we were missing was quality time with God and better communication.
Having both Rick and Denise at the sessions really helped us with understanding different perspectives. As Rick shared his life experiences and how they influenced him as a man, I started to better understand my husband. Denise’s transparency and love & affection for her husband helped me to show love through affectionate and speak my husband’s love language. Even after the first session I saw improvements in our interactions from our communication to how affectionate we became on a daily basis.
Between the tools provided and the discussions we had in our sessions I found myself becoming closer to my husband. I started to feel the butterflies I once had when we first met and understood how important courting is to the both of us even after years of marriage. I am forever grateful for the opportunity to meet with Rick and Denise! It was such a blessing to see them use their marriage as their ministry.
The sessions with the Mathis' are one of the best investments we have made into our marriage. Its one thing to tell someone how their marriage should be and its another thing to show them through your own marriage. Getting past the obstacles of marriage seem much more obtainable when you see that another couple has been there and overcame it. I really appreciated Rick putting into words, thoughts that I did not know how to express. Rick and Denise are great role models for my wife and me to look up to.
